Rogers retires, comes out as gay

Former U.S. national team winger Robbie Rogers rocked the domestic soccer world Friday with a post on his personal blog, and then with a Twitter message that reverberated (and will continue to do so) at so very many angles.

He?s retiring at age 25.

And he?s gay.

Last year, former MLS player David Testo came out as gay, but that was well after the conclusion of his playing days. Rogers? revelation will land with greater impact because of his prominence in U.S. soccer over the last few years. He has 18 full national team appearances and recently engineered a high-profile transfer to one of England?s storied clubs, Leeds United.

An earnest and heartfelt post on Rogers? personal blog provided the details from a talented player who has clearly struggled with this. The post was titled ?The Next Chapter.?

Things are never what they seem? My whole life I have felt different, different from my peers, even different from my family. In today?s society being different makes you brave.? To overcome your fears you must be strong and have faith in your purpose.

?For the past 25 year I have been afraid, afraid to show whom I really was because of fear. Fear that judgment and rejection would hold me back from my dreams and aspirations.?? Fear that my loved ones would be farthest from me if they knew my secret.? Fear that my secret would get in the way of my dreams.

??Secrets can cause so much internal damage. People love to preach about honesty, how honesty is so plain and simple.?? Try explaining to your loved ones after 25 years you are gay. Try convincing yourself that your creator has the most wonderful purpose for you even though you were taught differently.

?I always thought I could hide this secret. Football was my escape, my purpose, my identity. Football hid my secret, gave me more joy than I could have ever imagined? I will always be thankful for my career. I will remember Beijing, The MLS Cup, and most of all my teammates.? I will never forget the friends I have made a long the way and the friends that supported me once they knew my secret.??

Rogers alerted the world to the news with a Twitter post (below). The revealing Tweet poignantly followed one from two hours earlier.

Rogers struggled to gain a toehold at Leeds over the last year, damaging his ability to do so with an injury straight away following his move from the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer. He was loaned out to Stevenage in England?s third tier but failed to last. He seemed to be tumbling out of the game when Leeds announced earlier this month that his contract would be terminated by mutual consent.

Rogers has been without a team over the last month; Columbus recently traded his MLS rights to Chicago, although he never indicated interest in returning to Major League Soccer.

This does, perhaps, shed some light on why such a talented figure was having such professional difficulty, having lost traction on his playing career.

I happened to be standing next to an MLS general manager when we heard the news. He said he perfectly: ?You hope he can find some peace with it all.?

Why Mozilla Matters And Won?t Switch To WebKit

mozilla_wordmark_300dpiEarlier this week, Opera announced that it would stop working on its own Presto layout engine and switch to WebKit. It's obvious that the open source WebKit engine currently has a lot of momentum behind it, with Google, Apple and now Opera backing it. As Mozilla's CTO Brendan Eich wrote last night, however, don't expect Mozilla to switch engines anytime soon. Mozilla, thanks to its not-for-profit status (something most people are probably not even aware of), has a mission that's very different from the other vendors.

Video: Taking steps to reform immigration

>> the senate committee is taking a step towards immigration reform where the emotion surrounding this issue quickly became clear. protesters demanding an end to deportations and janet napolitano 's protesters were there twice more by other protesters. the secretary insisted that the border has never been more secure, something that they have questioned.

>> according to the general accountability office, the department apprehends about 61% of people who crossed the border illegally in 2011 . my question is, do you consider that a record to be proud of and count that as success or how would you characterize it?

>> i would characterize it as one of the many members that float around. other show that net migration is negative. more people are going south than coming north and that substantial progress has been made. are we done? no.

>> this comes after president obama renewed the call for immigration reform . joining me live, senior political reporter for politico and " usa today " contributor. raul, it was not just the president who addressed the comprehensive reform. rand paul and his tea party as well as senator marco rubio here. a lot of people are saying it is so linked to border security that we won't deal with the problem of immigration.

>> that are has been the case in the past. they link it to enforce am. it's a stalling technique that they set new goals and can never be met and never go forward with comprehensive reform. as much as i do support the dreamers and the rights of the immigrants, it seemed that the hearings, the timing was off in interrupting janet napolitano 's questioning. she had a very important point to make as a former governor and current head of dhs. our borders have never been stronger. that was a terrific point.

>> people are not coming into this country because there no jobs. it's part of the recession, right?

>> the magnet has been jobs. it's a chicken and egg game. do we need to secure the borders first or jobs? most agree we need a solution. we go around and around in this type of game.

>> michael was on a second ago with the daily beast . we were talking about the odds of what the president can be successful with with his agenda. immigration reform is the thing that people name instantly. he said you believe it when you see the vote from house republicans on this issue. what are the odds here? are we too optimistic because we are hearing so many voices?

>> i'm not sure we are too optimistic. i think there is a good chance and hashing out things now. the big issue is the path to citizenship. a lot of them don't know what's in the proposal yet. conservative members who will leave this fight say once they see what the proposals are and that calls for enforcement and border security . when you have people like jeff and marco rubio leaving this effort in the senate, i think it's going to have teeth.

>> you mentioned the conservative members of the senate. i want to play what lindsay graham had to say about potential problems ahead.

>> if i had to bet where this thing could run into a roadblock, it wouldn't be on the pathway to citizenship as long as it's earn and not a special pathway. we are all signed up for that. e verify and some new system to control employment, we are all signed up for that. here's the friction point. temporary workers are needed in the future. a legal source of labor for american workers. the goal is not to displace an american worker. you can get a temporary worker when there is no american available at a competitive wage.

>> the devil is in the detail.

>> we're hear enough details from the president regarding work visas and the more complicated issues that may arise?

>> no, but that's by design. the democrats are telling him to stay out of the details right now. if he starts putting down ultimatums or starts saying what he wants, republicans are going to run the other way. republicans will say it privately and democrats say it publicly, stay back. let both houses harsh this out and don't get into the minutia of it and that being said, i'm sure the democrats are talking to the white house behind the scenes .

>> quickly.

>> i agree. he cannot at this stage get too involved in the details. there so many republican devoted to ob strucking him that will not work in practical terms. on the response, immigration is supposed to be his signature issue and many in the community and latino community were disappointed there were only three sentences.

>> thank you. a great pleasure. thank you.

Lowest paying, highest anxiety jobs

by Maria C Collins

Created on: February 13, 2013 ??Last Updated: February 14, 2013

Anyone on low pay is anxious in the current economic climate. In many countries, such as the U.K, austerity measures are making poor people even poorer. Though unemployment figures are falling, the statistics hide the fact that more people are accepting part time and temporary jobs and short-term contracts, because full-time or permanent positions are very scarce indeed. Job seekers are taking any work that they can find. However, there are

many low paid jobs, where anxiety and stress are always part of the day.

Dairy Farmers may love their cows and their work outside, and city dwellers fondly imagine that a dairy farmer?s life must be idyllic. However, small dairy farmers, caught between the huge agri-businesses and the supermarkets, are having a hard time to get more money for their milk than it costs to produce. Cows cannot tell the time and their needs do not fit in to a cozy nine-to-five. Dairy farmers get up at silly o?clock, to tend their cows, and work long into the evening, seven days a week. Cows still need feeding, mucking out, milking and general care, whatever the weather.

Weather, in many countries, has not been kind to farmers for the past eighteen months. In the United Kingdom, record rainfall levels have meant flooded fields and low grass yield and this means cows being indoors much more than usual, which means the farmer must buy food for them. During the same period, animal feed prices have been rising rapidly. Many dairy farmers are so poor that they qualify for means-tested state benefits. If all that does not cause enough anxiety and stress, agriculture is a dangerous industry. The United Kingdom?s Health and Safety Executive reports that, although only 1.5% of Britain?s workforce works in agriculture, agricultural workers suffer 15-20% of the fatal accidents to British workers annually. Livestock are sometimes unpredictable as are farm vehicles, machinery, hay bales. Farmers can also catch diseases from their animals.

At the difficult moments in people?s lives, they expect the caring professions to be there for them. Nursing assistants assist qualified nurses with patient care; they fetch and carry, assisting patients with bathing, personal care, walking and eating and observe and care for patients as well as a myriad other jobs and tasks. They may work in hospitals, care homes, or other medical facilities under medical and nursing staff direction. For all that trained nursing or health care assistants do,

Perry ends California jobs trip as critics question payoff

Gov. Rick Perry's West Coast swing to woo businesses from California to Texas has come to an end.?

California's Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown is probably glad to see Perry go, especially after his crude evaluation of the Texas governor's radio ad campaign, calling it "barely a fart."?

Texas One, a public-private partnership set up by the legislature as a nonprofit and run through Perry's office, arranged for the radio ads... and the trip. Texas One is funded by companies, local governments and chambers of commerce wanting companies to expand or relocate to Texas.

A spokesman for the governor says following a 2010 Texas One visit to California, led by Perry, companies recruited decided to expand in Texas. In all of his trips to California, Perry spokesman Josh Havens says the governor has brought 4,445 jobs to Texas.

However, critics in California and in Texas think Perry's latest trip was about more than just jobs.

Perry loves to extol Texas' pro-business outlook, touting its low taxes and regulation outside the state, just as he does frequently at home.

In a Wednesday conference call from Laguna Beach with reporters he said, "Gov. Brown may call it 'poaching;' I just call it giving people an option of where they can locate their business and keep more of their money."

In stops at San Francisco, the Silicon Valley and the Los Angeles area, Perry pointed to Texas' superior job creation and California's recent increase in sales and income taxes.

"This isn't about bashing California," Perry said. "It's about promoting Texas and the economic climate we've created."??

But some Perry critics in California think his trip is more about trying to raise sagging Texas poll numbers, which show a majority of Republican voters want someone else to run for governor next year.

Dan Walters, a political columnist with the Sacramento Bee said in an online video: "He can think of nothing better to get Texans on his side than to tweak those crazy people out there in California, which all good Texans love to hate."

In Austin, Democratic lawmakers called the trip "political theater." Sen. Wendy Davis (D - Fort Worth) said if Perry is concerned about jobs, he could help restore some 25,000 school jobs lost in 2011 budget cuts.

"If Gov. Perry really wanted to do something to grow and continue to advance the business community in Texas, he'd be here helping us work on that," she said.

But Perry, the former Texas A&M yell leader, feels very comfortable being the top cheerleader for the state's business climate.

Identification of abnormal protein may help diagnose, treat ALS and frontotemporal dementia

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease, and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are devastating neurodegenerative diseases with no effective treatment. Researchers are beginning to recognize ALS and FTD as part of a spectrum disorder with overlapping symptoms.

Now investigators reporting online February 12 in the Cell Press journal Neuron have discovered an abnormal protein that first forms as a result of genetic abnormalities and later builds up in the brains of many patients with either disease.

"In identifying the novel protein that abnormally accumulates in the brains of affected patients, we have uncovered a potentially new therapeutic target and biomarker that would allow clinicians to confirm diagnosis of the diseases," says senior author Dr. Leonard Petrucelli, Chair of Neuroscience at Mayo Clinic in Florida.

By analyzing brain tissue from patients with ALS or FTD, Dr. Petrucelli and his team discovered that the abnormal protein, which they call C9RANT, is generated as a result of repeat expansions of nucleotides in the noncoding region of the C9ORF72 gene. These expansions are the most common cause of ALS and FTD. "Simply put, an error in the highly regulated cellular process through which proteins are generated causes the abnormal production of C9RANT," explains Dr. Petrucelli.

The researchers discovered the protein C9RANT after creating a novel antibody to specifically detect it. The ability to detect C9RANT in individuals' cerebrospinal fluid may provide a valuable diagnostic and prognostic tool for identifying patients carrying the C9ORF72 repeat expansion and for then tracking the progression of the disease in these at-risk individuals.

"Although it remains to be shown whether C9RANT is causing the cell death or toxicity associated with disease symptoms, our discovery offers a potential target to prevent neuronal loss in patients carrying the C9ORF72 repeat expansion," says Dr. Petrucelli.

The concept that abnormal proteins accumulate and can be toxic to cells is not new. In fact, tau protein forms tangles in Alzheimer's disease and alpha-synuclein forms clumps in Parkinson's disease. Just as new therapies are being developed to break down the protein aggregates associated with these diseases, developing a therapeutic strategy to target C9RANT aggregates may also prove beneficial.

NKorea Nuke Test Infuriates US, Japan; Obama: 'Highly Provocative'

SEOUL, South Korea?? North Korea's third nuclear test on Tuesday in defiance of U.N. resolutions, angered the United States and Japan, is likely to infuriate its only major ally ? China ? and increase penalties against Pyongyang.

The North said the test had "greater explosive force" than the 2006 and 2009 tests that were widely seen as small-scale. Its KCNA news agency said it had used a "miniaturized" and lighter nuclear device, indicating that it had again used plutonium which is more suitable for use as a missile warhead.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the third of his line to rule the country, has now presided over two long-range rocket launches and a nuclear test during his first a year in power ? pushing policies that have propelled his impoverished and malnourished country ever closer to becoming a nuclear weapons power.

President Barack Obama said the test was a "highly provocative act" that hurt stability in the region and called its nuclear program a threat to U.S. and international security.

"The danger posed by North Korea's threatening activities warrants further swift and credible action by the international community. The United States will also continue to take steps necessary to defend ourselves and our allies," Obama said in a statement.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the test was a "grave threat" that could not be tolerated. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the test was a "clear and grave violation" of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

South Korea said the size of the seismic activity indicated a nuclear explosion slightly larger than the North's two previous tests at 6-7 kilotons, although that is still relatively small. The Hiroshima bomb was around 20 kilotons.

The U.S. Geological Survey said that a seismic event measuring 5.1 magnitude had occurred on Tuesday, with North Korea later confirming the nuclear test.

"It was confirmed that the nuclear test that was carried out at a high level in a safe and perfect manner using a miniaturized and lighter nuclear device with greater explosive force than previously did not pose any negative impact on the surrounding ecological environment," KCNA said.

The test prompted the U.N. Security Council to call for an emergency meeting later on Tuesday. It likely to be a major embarrassment for Beijing, the North's sole major economic and diplomatic ally.

"The test is hugely insulting to China, which now can be expected to follow through with threats to impose sanctions," said Mark Fitzpatrick of the International Institute for Strategic Studies think tank.

North Korea trumpeted the announcement on its state television channel to patriotic music against the backdrop of an image of its national flag.

It linked the test to its technical prowess in launching a long-range rocket in December, a move that triggered the U.N. sanctions, backed by China, that Pyongyang said prompted it to carry out Tuesday's nuclear test.

The North's ultimate aim, Washington believes, is to design an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead that could hit the United States. North Korea says the program is aimed merely at putting satellites in space.

North Korea used plutonium in previous nuclear tests and prior to Tuesday there had been speculation it would use highly enriched uranium so as to conserve its plutonium stocks as testing eats into its limited supply of the material that could be used to construct a nuclear bomb.

Despite its three nuclear tests and long-range rocket tests, North Korea is not believed to be close to manufacturing a nuclear missile capable of hitting the United States.

SANCTIONS AND DIPLOMATIC FALLOUT

Japan immediately called for more sanctions against North Korea and South Korea's defense ministry said additional nuclear tests and rocket launches by the North should not be ruled out.

"This is a grave problem for our country's national security and we must be extremely concerned," Kyodo news agency quoted Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera as telling reporters.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said Pyongyang had informed China and the United States of its plans to test on Monday, although this could not be confirmed.

When new leader Kim, now aged 30, took power after his father's death in December 2011, there were hopes the he would bring reforms and end Kim Jong-il's "military first" policies.

Instead of which, the North, whose economy is smaller than it was 20 years ago and where a third of children are believed to be malnourished, appears to be trapped in a cycle of sanctions followed by further provocations.

"The more North Korea shoots missiles, launches satellites or conducts nuclear tests, the more the U.N. Security Council will impose new and more severe sanctions," said Shen Dingli, a professor and regional security expert at Shanghai's Fudan University.

"It is an endless, vicious cycle."

But options for the international community appear to be in short supply, as North Korea is already one of the most heavily sanctioned states on earth.

Tuesday's action appeared to have been timed for the run-up to Feb. 16 anniversary celebrations of Kim Jong-il's birthday, as well as to achieved maximum international attention.

Significantly, the test comes at a time of political transition in China, Japan, and South Korea, and as Obama begins his second term.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is bedding down a new government and South Korea's new president, Park Geun-hye, prepares to take office on Feb. 25.

China too is in the midst of a once-in-a-decade leadership transition to Xi Jinping, who takes office in March. Both Abe and Xi are staunch nationalists.

The longer-term game plan from Pyongyang may be to restart talks aimed at winning food and financial aid.

Its puny economy and small diplomatic reach mean the North struggles to win attention on the global stage ? other than through nuclear tests and attacks on South Korea, last made in 2010.

"Now the next step for North Korea will be to offer talks . . .? any form to start up discussion again to bring things to their advantage," said Jeung Young-tae, senior research fellow at the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul.
