End of the world on 12/21/12? Not just yet, says the Vatican's top astronomer. (+video)

The director of the Vatican Observatory dismissed talk of a Mayan doomsday on Dec. 21, 2012, saying that the end of the Earth, if it happens, is billions of years away.

A Mayan dancer performs at the Xcaret Eco Theme Park on the outskirts of Playa del Carmen, Mexico, on Wednesday. Although some say the Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world on Dec. 21, 2012, the Vatican's top astronomer is rather dubious.

But while the idea that Earth could be shattered into a billion pieces by some sort of interplanetary cataclysm has worried millions of people around the world, the Holy See's chief astronomer suggests that life as we know it is unlikely to come to an end quite so soon.

In an editorial in the Vatican's official daily newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano ? in an issue whose front-page article was entitled??The end is not nigh ? at least for now? ? Rev. Jose Gabriel Funes, the?director of the Vatican Observatory, criticized "pseudo-prophecies" about the end of the Universe.??

?In the media and on the internet there is a great deal of talk of the end of the world, which the Mayan calendar supposedly?predicted for Dec 21. If you do a search on Google, you get 40 million results on the topic,? wrote Father Funes, a Jesuit priest from Argentina.

A 5,125-year cycle known in the Mayan calendar as the Long Count comes to an end on Friday and has been widely interpreted by cultists, New Age disciples, and believers in the esoteric as heralding the destruction of the planet.

But in a lengthy discourse on astronomy and Christian belief, he said it was ?not even worth discussing the scientific basis of these claims."

He acknowledged that the universe was slowly expanding, but that the destruction of the Earth ? if it ever happens ? will not occur for billions of years.

In any case, he said, Christians subscribe to the ?fundamental conviction that death is not the last word.?

Four hundred years after the Roman Catholic Church put Galileo on trial for heresy based on his belief that the Earth revolved around the Sun and not the other way round, the Vatican is rather more forgiving of the science of astronomy.

Its observatory is at Castel Gandolfo, the summer residence of the pope, which lies in the hills outside Rome. One of the oldest astronomical research institutes in the world, it also has a research facility hosted by the Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Funes, who has a master?s degree in astronomy from the National University of Cordoba in Argentina as well as degrees in philosophy and theology, was made director of the observatory in 2006.

He has not been reluctant to take modern science into account when considering religious tenets. In an interview in 2008, he said it was possible that intelligent forms of life could exist on other planets in the solar system.

Aliens would still be God?s creatures, he said, in an article in L?Osservatore Romano headlined?"The extraterrestrial is my brother." The notion did not necessarily contradict the teachings of the Catholic Church, he said, arguing that to dismiss the possibility of alien life would be to underestimate God?s creative powers.

30 Days Of LGBT Holiday Giving: Give A Gift To OUTreach Resource Center

Note: This holiday season, in lieu of a traditional holiday gift guide, we'll be featuring a different LGBT organization each day for our "30 Days Of LGBT Giving." Check back tomorrow for a look at another incredible group that's working tirelessly on behalf of the LGBT community.

North of Salt Lake City, in Ogden, Utah, sits OUTreach Resource Center, a community organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer youth, and their allies.

The center, which operates on Wednesdays and Thursdays from the afternoon to early evenings, can be found in the lower level of the Unitarian Universalist Church In Ogden, where youth ages 14-23 go for OUTreach's affirming, safe-space environment. The community resource center is only the "second center in the state of Utah to provide not only safe space and support, but also quality programming and services designed to help youth survive and thrive."

On Wednesdays, the center hosts about 50 or so youth and volunteers, participating in a variety of classes, activities and guest speakers and have a homemade dinner together as well. On Thursdays (the more quiet days), people go to the center for some one-on-one attention whether it be for tutoring, job search help or just someone to talk to.

Interested in learning more about this great organization and how you can help? Visit their website and check them out on Facebook and on Twitter @ogdenoutreach.

2 dead in Moscow airliner crash

MOSCOW (AP) ? A passenger airliner careered off the runway at Russia's third-busiest airport on Saturday, broke into pieces and caught fire, killing two people.

There were conflicting reports as to how many people were aboard the Tu-204 belonging to Russian airline Red Wings in the accident at Vnukovo Airport, ranging from eight to 12.

Emergency officials said several were in critical or serious condition. Interior Ministry spokesman Gennady Bogachev told the state TV news channel Vesti that two people were killed.

Vesti showed photos of the plane's wreckage, with the cockpit clearly sheared off from the fuselage and a large chunk gashed out near the tail.

The crash occurred amid light snow, but other details were not immediately known. Initial reports said the plane crashed while landing, but later reports indicated it was trying to take off.

Prior to Saturday's crash, there had been no fatal accidents reported for Tu-204s, which entered commercial service in 1995. The plane is a twin-engine midrange jet with a capacity of about 210 passengers.

Vnukovo, on the southern outskirts of Moscow, is one of the Russian capital's three international airports. The airport was closed after the crash and flights were rerouted to Moscow's other airports, Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo.

Stocks tumble as 'fiscal cliff' deadline nears

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks fell for a fifth day on concern that Washington lawmakers will fail to reach a budget deal before a self-imposed year-end deadline.

The five-day losing streak for the Dow Jones industrial average was the longest since July.

The Dow dropped 158.20 points to 12,938.11 points, with losses accelerating in the last 20 minutes of trading as reports circulated that President Barack Obama would not be making a new budget proposal in a meeting with congressional leaders.

The Standard & Poor 500 index fell 15.67 points to 1,402.43, its longest losing streak in three months, and the Nasdaq dropped 25.59 points to 2,960.31.

"The reality, late in the day, is that a deal is just not going to get done," said Ryan Detrick, a senior technical strategist at Schaeffer Investment Research. "We could be greeted by a big sell-off at the start of January."

President Barack Obama returned from a Christmas break in Hawaii to meet with congressional leaders at the White House to try thrash out the terms of a deal that would prevent across-the-board tax increases for millions of Americans as well as simultaneous government spending cuts beginning Jan. 1. Those measures, if implemented, could push the economy back into recession, economists say.

Stocks closed lower Thursday but erased most of an early loss after Republicans said they would reconvene the House of Representatives Sunday in hopes of piecing together a last-minute budget deal.

Traders have been focusing on Washington, and the budget negotiations, since the Nov. 6 presidential election returned a divided government to power.

"I can't wait till this is done, so we can start talking about markets again and not just about politics," said Doug Cote, chief market strategist at ING Investment Management. Cote doesn't expect lawmakers will manage to reach a deal before the deadline and says that when people assess the extent of tax increases on the way, "the market is going reel."

Cote also expects slowing earnings growth to hit stocks.

Despite the fiscal gridlock in Washington, major stock indexes are holding on to gains for the year. The Dow is up 5.9 percent, the S&P 500 index is 11.5 percent higher and the Nasdaq is up 13.6 percent.

Stocks rose in 2012 on optimism that a housing market recovery, coupled with an improving job market, will support economic growth. The Federal Reserve has also extended its bond purchasing program, which is intended to lower borrowing costs and encourage spending and investment.

Stocks declined despite reports that suggested the outlook for the economy is improving.

A measure of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes increased last month to its highest level in two and a half years, the latest sign of improvement in the once-battered housing market. The National Association of Realtors said Friday that its seasonally adjusted pending home sales index rose to its highest since April 2010.

The Institute of Supply Management's Chicago-area purchasing managers index for December came in at 51.6, beating estimates for a gain to 51.

Bond prices rose as investors moved money into defensive investments. The yield on the benchmark rise 10-year Treasury note, which falls when bond prices rise, dropped to 1.70 percent from 1.75 percent late Thursday.

Among stocks making moves:

Hewlett-Packard fell 36 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $13.68 after the computer and printer maker said the Department of Justice is investigating H-P's business software unit Autonomy. H-P bought Autonomy for $10 billion in 2011 and has accused the company's former management of fudging its accounting before the acquisition. H-P has lost almost half its market value this year, making it the biggest decliner among the 30 stocks in the Dow average.

Barnes and Noble rose 62 cents, or 4.3 percent, to $14.97 after the U.K. publishing and education company Pearson said it is making an $89.5 million investment in the company's Nook Media division, as the two companies look to make a bigger digital push into the education sector.

How to fix bad posture and reduce pain | Natural Health 365

Fri. Dec. 28, 2012 by Michaelle Edwards, LMT, ERYT

Back Pain Solutions(NaturalHealth365) To reduce pain within your body ? you?ll have to fix bad posture as soon as possible. Are you too tired to sit up straight? Well, slouching is actually harder work than sitting or standing with a naturally aligned spine.

When we slouch, we enlist muscles to perform functions they are not designed to do. Superficial muscles in our back and neck area become strained, tense and over-stretched. These muscles are designed to rotate the head and flex the neck, but not for long sustained contractions involved with alignment.

The hidden dangers of sitting (too much) at a computer

Deeper slow twitch postural muscles should do the work of holding our head up and our body graceful, powerful and pain-free. Slouching is an epidemic in the Western World, and I feel it is primarily a result of too much sitting poorly in chairs and hunching over laptops.

Our young people have the worst posture of any generation and x-rays of some 20 year olds look like the arthritic spines of older people. We need to take serious measures to teach good posture, provide ergonomic chairs in our schools and stop slouching.

Are government health officials really interested in saving money on healthcare?

Chronic pain costs billions every year taxing our health care system and the economy and much of the pain is a result of slouching when sitting in chairs and cars.

The chair has an unnatural right angle shape that does not conform to our naturally curving spine shape. Many people slouch in a chair and roll back and sit on the lower tailbone and sacral area instead of aligning their hips and ribs so they can balance on the sit bones at the base of the pelvis.

When we let the pelvis tilt backward, the breastbone sinks, the head goes forward and the neck and back muscles get drafted into dysfunctional habits. The diaphragm gets compressed and the movements of breathing are forced into the upper shoulder area that in many cases will enlist a low level flight or freeze response in the nervous system.

Poor posture contributes to chronic disease

The chronic adrenal fatigue created by slouching can eventually lead to chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other autoimmune diseases.

Another bane of slouch sitting in chairs happens because we lose the tone of our core postural muscles, since the back of the chair does the work of keeping the spine upright. We get up out of our chairs but the chair habits stay in our body leading to chronic slouching.

Slouching is a result of dysfunctional breathing habits created by poor posture and also poor posture creates dysfunctional breathing habits. They are one in the same and the connection between the two is a huge blind spot in the medical, yoga and fitness world.

Stop and take a moment to breathe

One can avoid slouching by learning powerful breathing practices that engage the muscles that support the spine and diaphragm.

Exercising good posture involves waking up the core breathing muscles. Tight abs and shoulders drawn back are inefficient ways to stop slouching that can actually drain energy and restrict movement. Try holding your stomach in or pulling back on your shoulders while walking ? you can see and feel why this is not a good way to get aligned with better posture.

Many yoga poses and exercises engage our muscles to make us slouch!

Some athletes exercise in body positions that are a muscled up slouch position. Yogis do forward bends that shorten the front and overstretch the back, compressing the diaphragm and making the ligaments in the hips and spine too lose. Many people engage daily in ab crunching moves that enlist the muscles of the trunk to be short and tight which can cause the organs to protrude and make a ?pot belly.?

Cyclists in particular are known for hunching over their handlebars, and paddlers ? seated as well as stand up ? are often in very poor postural alignment when they exercise. The muscles that people engage to shorten the abdominals and round the upper back in these positions mimics slouching. Working the body hard in these positions engages the deep exhalation muscles and locks them in, so it is like they are literally stuck in the exhale.

Is the fitness industry really helping us to get fit?

Many fitness or yoga exercises that direct us to keep the belly tight and flat unnaturally stifle the breathing process, while shortening the front of the body and pulling the head and shoulders forward into a slouch.

Try taking a deep coughing action and then hold the action of these muscles to get an experiential feeling for what happens when our abdominals are trained to shorten. Exercising with our natural spine curves reversed or compressed restricts breathing, and forced tight abs can inhibit downward contractions of our diaphragm.

When exercising, doing things like keeping your back flat, tailbone tucked, belly tight, knees straight, or pushing belly out on inhale will actually inhibit your ability to breathe and can lead to more slouching.

How can we stop slouching?

Practice self-massage daily on the head, neck, feet, and arms to release unnecessary tension. Don?t wait for someone else to massage you, you can and should massage yourself. Sit on chairs with the knees lower than the hips and stay upright on your sit bones.

Manage your stress levels with walking and deep breathing. Focused breathing methods can greatly improve posture by aligning your spine from the inside out. The aim is to get rid of ingrained tension habits from slouching so that breath happens easily and naturally.

You can practice breathing through a straw while you sit on the edge of a bench or stool. Make sure you are on your sit bones with the curve in your lower back and abdominals relaxed. Keep the middle of your ear, shoulder, and hips aligned and practice keeping your shoulder blades drawing down as you breathe in through the straw.

After inhaling, hold your breath for a moment, take the straw out and slowly exhale making a SSSSS sound while focusing on keeping your waist area long and shoulders dropped during the exhale. Inhale again with the straw and notice how pulling the shoulder blades down will bring your breastbone up.

Again on the exhale, take the straw out and make a SSSS sound like a snake while you practice being on your sit bones and keeping length in your spine during the movements of exhalation. By practicing a lengthening of your trunk muscles when you exhale, you will teach your body how to enlist your abs to stabilize your spine rather than shorten and compress it with exercises that shorten your abs.

An easy way to improve your posture and your health

You can do this standing or sitting to get your body aligned from the inside out, turn on your intrinsic postural muscles and turn off all the extra work you have been doing by slouching.

Relax, walk around the room and notice how light your body feels and how easy it is to hold good posture and stop slouching by using the internal movements of breathing to activate your deep core.

H5N1: CIDRAP: News scan for December 27

Via CIDRAP:?NEWS SCAN: Pertussis peak in Minnesota, cholera in Cuba. Excerpt:
A cholera outbreak in the Cuban capital of Havana may be related to flooding that occurred in eastern Cuba as a result of Hurricane Sandy in late October, according to a recent story from the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR), an international not-for-profit group that focuses on issues in crisis-racked regions.?
A doctor who requested anonymity said 47 cases have been identified in Habana Vieja (Old Havana), a tourist area in the city center, and that 33 of the cases originated in the hurricane-hit areas.?
Authorities have responded to the outbreak by setting up special hospital wards, cleaning up streets and buildings in parts of Habana Vieja, and distributing medications to prevent dehydration, the story said.?
Meanwhile, in Holguin province in eastern Cuba, officials said Vladimir Lenis Hospital is admitting three to five new cholera patients daily.
This is one of those cases where the news is the absence of news. The IWPR report is a rehash of posts like this one on Hablemos Press, and now it's recycled again. But no one seems to be taking an interest in confirming a story going back to last summer?certainly not the official Cuban media, and not WHO, and even the Cuban exile media aren't talking much about it. Nor are the media of other Caribbean countries showing any interest.?

But there are certainly a lot of foreign correspondents in Cuba, and you'd expect at least one or two would be willing to risk being kicked out of the country if they could get something solid on the cholera story. Apparently not.

Things To Consider When Homeschooling Your Child | Doc's ...

Many people decide to school they children at home because of inadequacies they see in modern public schools. But there are some downfalls to homeschooling that must also be avoided. You should read this article if you are considering homeschooling your children.

Planning your meals in advance will definitely help your schedule. Being prepared will let you to focus on teaching your child and not have to worry about what?s for dinner.

As a homeschool educator, don?t allow the educational guides and textbooks to limit the scope of your teaching. Your books and your curriculum should guide you in the right direction. Utilize them as aids to help illustrate your own well-crafted lessons to the children you teach. In the end, that is the true beauty of home-based education.

TIP! You can easily burn yourself out with chores on top of your homeschooling. Do not hesitate to recruit your partner in helping with the chores, and if you can afford it, hire help from the outside.

If you have very young toddlers as well as those in school, you have to ensure that the toddlers have activities too. Carefully select some toys, art supplies and activities to coordinate with the lessons your other children are learning. This will allow them to feel a part of the group.

Be cognizant of your budget for homeschooling. This will help you to allot resources efficiently, while reducing your expenses. You need to have separate accounts for each child. Remember to give a little wiggle room as expenses can change and errors can be made.

There are lots of new things to learn about homeschooling. You can go online and find groups for parents who school their children at home. They can offer valuable advice, tips and tricks that you can use in your own curriculum. Networking with other homeschoolers with the same goals and objectives as your own is a valuable resource.

TIP! You can be creative in the ways you allow your children to get together with others Public schools provide natural opportunities to socialize, and you must think outside the box to replicate that. Go on field trips with other homeschool groups.

Encourage independent learning. It?s appropriate to offer guidance, but the point is not for you to do the work. That responsibility should be left entirely to your child. They will know what they need to do if you outline it for them and give them timelines for completion. Independence is learned this way, as well as confidence in their abilities. They will also learn the impact of goofing off instead of focusing if free time is lost because of it.

See if you can?t team-up with other like minded parents in the area who are also homeschooling their kids. Your child can get a lot of good social interaction by being in a small group on a regular basis. You can also use this as an opportunity to leave your home.

Do a comparison list of your feelings regarding homeschooling and traditional schooling. If you felt your children were not receiving everything they needed at public school, this comparison can assist you in covering those missing items. You will have essentially created a checklist of things to concentrate on and things to avoid. Keep the list handy to allow yourself to reference it whenever necessary.

TIP! Be prepared to do research for topics you don?t know enough about. You can educate yourself by reading your child?s textbooks, researching things online, and even asking others.

The best teachers are honest with themselves about their shortcomings. A lot of people who homeschool want to skip topics they feel that they are weak with. This will affect your children?s education, so it?s not a good idea. If you?re feeling deficient in some areas in the main curriculum, try to hire a tutor or trade with another parent that homeschools.

Pick a room in the house that you want to teach your child. Allowing them complete freedom throughout the home can lead to many distractions. By having a designated classroom, you can help your child remain on task.

Homeschooled children may be getting a great education, but it takes effort to ensure they also get enough socialization. Organize play dates with families and friends who have children. Bring your children to the park so they can play with other kids. Find some sport teams, clubs and organizations for your child.

TIP! Homeschooling can offer a child a lot. There is a huge advantage to teaching at home, rather than sending your child to an often overcrowded and typically underfunded public learning facility.

You need to know all you can about homeschooling before you start out. Set a workable schedule and use teaching methods that work for your child?s learning style.

High schoolers who are homeschooled must focus on passing their GED tests. Address your child?s weak areas by having them take a mock GED and then tailoring your lessons to the subjects in which he does poorly. You will be able to work on any tough spots.

Do you have trouble teaching your children something? Try a different approach. Sometimes you need to teach them in a different manner, such as by seeing it happening, hearing it or even tasting something related. Children do not learn the same way, and when you try a different approach, learning may become easier.

TIP! An online blog is something that your child can benefit from significantly. You?re going to teach them to write anyway, and a blog is the perfect learning tool.

Sometimes home schooling is a tense situation for children and parents who are spending such a tremendous amount of time together. Focus on keeping school issues at school and home issues at home. If things happen to become particularly tense, you have the flexibility to take a break. You will both benefit from this.

Superstars recall the first Royal Rumble Match

Taking place Jan. 24, 1988, the first-ever Royal Rumble Match featured only 20 Superstars and was won by "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan. (WATCH) Little did anybody realize at the time that the match, which was broadcast on the USA Network rather than pay-per-view, would lay the groundwork for one of WWE's most enduring match formats. A quarter-century later, the WWE Universe looks ahead to Royal Rumble 2013.

But before ushering in the next installment of this mightily proud event, find out what the participants in the inaugural Royal Rumble Match had to say about the unique and groundbreaking innovation. In the pages that follow, Duggan, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Bret "Hit Man" Hart and other WWE Hall of Famers and Legends share their memories from that historic night.

Stocks log 3-day decline on 'cliff' fears

7 hrs.

Stocks eased off their lows but still finished in the red Wednesday, extending losses for a third-straight session, as weakness in the retail sector and ongoing worries over the looming "fiscal cliff" put a damper on gains.

"There's just no certainty and people don't know where to step," said Stephen Guilfoyle of Meridian Equity Partners. "We're kind of in a quandary here?the market didn't catch at 1,422 like it was supposed to and the next catch point is 1,415 on the S&P. There's not a lot of volume and you have a lot of traders with question marks on their heads right now."?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average?ended in negative territory for the third?straight session, dragged by UnitedHealth. Bank of America led the blue-chip gainers.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also closed lower. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, gained above 19.

Most key S&P sectors finished in negative territory, led by consumer discretionary, while materials?gained.?

Obama will return to Washington early on Thursday, according to the White House, to deal with the deadlocked talks between Democrats and Republicans on what to do with $600 billion in tax increases and automatic spending cuts, due to kick in on Jan. 1.

"I don't think the President is coming back from Hawaii without anticipating we're getting something done so I'm optimistic and the street is somewhat optimistic too," said Gordon Charlop of Rosenblatt Securities. "You don't get a sense that they're selling into the pessimism that people are trying to circulate about the fiscal cliff not being resolved."?

(Read More:Over the Fiscal Cliff: What Kind of Landing?)

Wall Street has been increasingly worried that the two sides may not reach a deal in time. Art Cashin, director of floor operations for UBS, said such an outcome would result in a 95 percent chance of a U.S. recession next year.

"We'll be looking at muted volume," Charlop added. "It's going to be a wait-and-see session."

Volume is expected to remain throughout the shortened-holiday trading week with many traders still on vacation and with major European markets closed for the day for Boxing Day. In Asia, markets closed higher on thin volumes, with Japanese stocks rallying to hit nine-month highs on a weaker yen.

Worries over the fiscal cliff and an extremely weak report on the holiday shopping season put major retail stocks including Macy's, Wal-Mart and Target under pressure. Coach, Urban Outfitters and Ralph Lauren were also sharply lower.

Sales in the two months before Christmas rose just 0.7 compared to last year, the slowest rate of growth since 2008, according to the MasterCard Advisors Spending Pulse. Analysts had been expecting growth of 3 to 4 percent.

Amazon.com and Netflix were both slightly lower after an outage at an Amazon web service center impacted Netflix subscribers in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America on Christmas eve. Service was fully restored by Christmas day.

Meanwhile, Apple?weighed on the tech sector and the Nasdaq 100 index, slipping nearly 1 percent.

Research In Motion soared to lead the Nasdaq 100 gainers as pictures of what is believed to be the newest BlackBerry device with a physical keyboard made rounds on the Internet. The BlackBerry 10 launch event is expected to take place on January 30.

Marvell Technology plunged more than 10 percent after a federal jury ordered the semiconductor company to pay $1.2 billion in damages in a patent infringement lawsuit against Carnegie Mellon University.?

Herbalife rallied, looking to snap a nine-day losing streak, after the nutrition and skin-care products company retained a legal firm to help defend itself against attacks by hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, according to the Wall Street Journal. Last week, Ackman shorted?Herbalife's stock and accused the company of operating a pyramid scheme.

On the economic front, the S&P/Case Shiller home price index of 20 major cities rose 0.7 percent in October on a seasonally adjusted basis, topping expectations for a gain of 0.5 percent. And prices in the 20 cities jumped 4.3 percent from last year, beating forecasts for an increase of 4.0 percent.

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond said manufacturers in the central Atlantic region posted modest activity in December, but at a slower pace than in November.?

Creativity brings the online booking model to recreation ... - 1

Classitivity, a searchable listing for classes, offers times, locations and the ability to book through the site, which makes it easier for the user to map recreational activities according to their choice

Beatnik: Payal Kadakia

What it is
Looking for a lunchtime yoga class? Want to take a crack at stand-up and unleash your inner Chris Rock? Classtivity.com can help. This searchable listing for classes offers times, locations and the ability to book through the site. Launched in June in New York City, the site lists some 4,000 offerings in the Big Apple?from skating and tennis instruction to beer brewing?with hundreds being added each week.

How it started
While working at Warner Music Group in New York, Payal Kadakia, a lifelong dancer, was interested in taking a ballet class but couldn?t find one at the time she wanted. ?I thought, This is ridiculous. This needs to be solved. There are so many classes being offered at this very moment, and I can?t find one of them,? she recalls. She left Warner in spring 2011 to start her business and was accepted into startup accelerator TechStars? New York location early this year.

Why it took off
Classtivity works much like OpenTable does for restaurants, offering consumers the convenience of online booking and?perhaps more intriguing?giving new businesses an opportunity to be discovered and build a client base. Classes range from $10 drop-in yoga sessions to $200 high-end cooking and creative workshops. The site seamlessly integrates the schedules that studios, gyms and other businesses run via proprietary solutions and back-end technologies. Kadakia estimates that by the end of the year, the site will list sessions from 3,500 providers in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco, mostly acquired by word-of-mouth. Among the bigger accounts that use the site are Flywheel Sports, Dance New Amsterdam and New York Health & Racquet Club.

The business case
Classtivity takes a cut of class fees booked through the site (usually 10 to 15 percent). It?s also exploring how to broker online retail sales related to bookings; for example, reserve a yoga class, and the site might suggest a mat or tank top to purchase. (Kadakia declined to disclose revenue.)

What?s next
After the expansion to Los Angeles and San Francisco, Kadakia plans to move into Chicago and Boston. Classtivity recently unveiled a social networking component that allows users to create profiles, recommend and rate classes and follow others who have similar taste in activities. The idea, Kadakia says, is to keep people engaged and help them discover new outlets for their passions.

Egypt's government sets priorities after charter

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's government set legislative priorities for parliament on Wednesday as it convened for the first time since a new constitution was passed, asking lawmakers to focus on setting rules for upcoming elections, regulating the media and fighting corruption.

The official confirmation Tuesday that the Islamist-drafted constitution passed in a referendum ushered in a new chapter in Egypt's two-year transition from authoritarian rule, likely to be characterized more by legal battles and less by street protests.

The dispute over the constitution deeply polarized the country, reigniting mass street protests that turned deadly at times.

"We have now moved from conflict in the streets between political forces and the regime to a new phase of legal disputes over legislation and control of state institutions," said Nasser Amin, the head of the Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and Legal Profession. "This is the most critical phase...and the battle won't be very clear to regular people."

The constitution's supporters, including Islamist President Mohammed Morsi and his government, had argued it would pave the way for more stability in Egypt and the building up of state institutions.

The largely secular and liberal opposition who opposed the constitution fear it enshrines a prominent role for Islamic law, or Shariah, in governing the country's affairs and reinforces Islamists' hold on power. They say it constitution restricts freedoms and ignores the rights of women and minorities.

The main opposition group has questioned the legitimacy of the charter itself, saying it was rushed through without national consensus.

"Egypt constitution (is) void as it conflicts (with) certain peremptory norms of international law," such as freedom of belief and expression, opposition leader Mohammed ElBaradei said on his Twitter account Wednesday.

Under the new constitution, the Islamist-dominated Shura Council, the traditionally toothless upper house, was granted temporary legislative powers and began its work a day after the official results of the referendum said the charter passed with nearly 64 percent. It will legislate until elections for a new lower house are held within two months.

"I congratulate the Egyptian people on behalf of the government for the passing of the constitution of the second republic, which establishes a modern democratic state where the people's voices are heard and where injustice, dictatorship, repression, nepotism and corruption take a back seat," Cabinet Minister Mohammed Mahsoub, who hails from the Islamist Wasat Party, told the session.

But the 270-member council is boycotted by the largely liberal and secular opposition groups ?which has also rejected the presidential appointments to the upper house.

Morsi appointed 90 members to the council on the last day of the referendum on the constitution, in a bid to make it more representative. The other two-thirds of the members were elected last year with no more than seven percent of eligible voters.

But the new appointments maintained the hold of Islamists on the house.

Morsi has had legislative powers for months since a court dissolved the law-making lower house of parliament. He will address the nation later Wednesday to formally hand over legislative powers to the Shura Council.

In its first act, the Shura Council convened to swear in the 90 new members appointed by Morsi.

The government used the session to set its priorities for the coming period.

Speaking to the council, Mahsoub, the minister in charge of parliamentary affairs, said the government will prepare new legislation for parliament to discuss, including a law to regulate the upcoming parliamentary elections, anti-corruption laws, and laws to organize Egypt's efforts to recover money from corrupt officials from the era of ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

Mahsoub said such bills can be ready as early as next week, when the council convenes again for its regular working session.

He said the government also wants to draft laws to revise maximum and minimum wages, expand social insurance coverage and regulate the media, as well as institute Egypt's first freedom of information act.

"At this critical time for the nation, this respected council is required to pass a set of laws for the state to complete building its institutions," he said.

Amin, the judicial expert, said the constitution will also reduce the number of judges sitting on the country's top court, the Supreme Constitutional Court, from 19 to 11. This was seen by some as a way to get rid of some of the most critical judges of Islamists. Some of them were appointed during the Mubarak era, and Morsi viewed them as holdovers who tried to undermine his authorities.

"The court now will constitute little danger to the legislation to be passed in the coming period," Nasser said. "After the end of the street battle, and after the constitution and new legislature, (the government) will make all the amendments it wants through the law."

The opposition also refused to attend a national dialogue hosted by Morsi's vice president, saying the agenda for the talks are not clear and the disputed constitution was already rushed through. Instead, it says it will contest the upcoming parliamentary elections and hopes to achieve a sizeable representation to challenge the constitution.

The opposition will be watching the Shura Council to see whether new legislation increases civil liberties and addresses poverty and social inequalities ? or increases the ability of the state to crack down on its critics and impose an Islamist rule, as many fear.

Consumers want digital communications from providers, from ...

Consumers? Favored Communications From Health Professionals85% of U.S. health consumers say that emails, text messages, and voicemails are at least as helpful as in-person or phone conversations with health providers, according to the?TeleVoxHealthy World study,?Technology Beyond the Exam Room. The study was based on surveys conducted with over 2,200 health providers across specialties, and 1,015 U.S. adults over 18.

Furthermore, one in 3 consumers admit to being more honest when talking about medical needs via automated voice response systems, emails or texts than face-to-face with a health provider.

And 3 in 10 consumers believe that receiving digital health communications from providers such as texts, voicemails or emails that provide patient care would build trust with their providers. 51% say they?d feel more valued as a patient via digital health communications.

Flu-Vaccination-InfograhicThe chart illustrates various communications messaging that consumers value via various digital channels. The red bar represents email: clearly, email is a valued channel across nearly all message types surveyed, from patient care (49%) and health tips (68%) to seasonal reminders (55%, THINK: flu shots, illustrated in the second infographic from TeleVox) and payment reminders (56%).

All consumers, from Gen X and Gen Y to Baby Boomers, look for these messages to be personally tailored, welcoming in the era of personalized medicine via digital communications.

Health Populi?s Hot Points:? Patients are educating themselves to be health consumers in the emerging healthcareDIY era. While payers and providers should be doing a better job preparing people to play this role, the education is largely done by people themselves. Consumers? demands for digitally-delivered health services are central to this education, which nurtures empowerment and trust, as people pointed out in the TeleVox survey.

That 1 in 2 consumers (49%) say they?re open to receiving medical care between visits via email testifies to consumers? demand for telehealth services. If payment can align between payers, providers and consumers to marshall distance health services to the home and workplace, we?ll be building a more satisfied, empowered, and healthy patient. Value-based and accountable care can help get us to this Patient 2.0.

Russian ruling party official shot dead in Caucasus

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Two gunmen shot dead a ruling party official on Tuesday in Russia's North Caucasus, where the Kremlin is fighting to subdue an Islamist insurgency, investigators said.

Unknown assailants burst into Boris Zherukov's office in Nalchik, capital of the province of Kabardino-Balkaria, and shot him twice in the head, Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement.

Zherukov was head of President Vladimir Putin's ruling United Russia party faction in the local parliament. He was also rector of the local State Agricultural University.

Insurgents fighting to carve an Islamic state out of a patchwork of mainly Muslim regions in Russia's mountainous south stage near-daily shootings and bomb attacks targeting officials and police.

The violence - fuelled by discontent over joblessness, corruption and police brutality - is mostly limited to the North Caucasus, where the Kremlin fought two wars against separatist rebels in Chechnya since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

But insurgents have also struck the Russian heartland, claiming responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed 37 at Moscow's busiest airport in 2011 and twin bombings on the Moscow metro that killed 40 in 2010.

Aerobic vs Resistance Training: Which is Better For Weight Loss ...

A recent study from Duke University comparing aerobic versus weight training to see which is better for weight loss was one of the most publicized studies of the year (my in-box was bursting with emails from Burn the Fat readers sending me links and asking me, ?What do you think of this Tom? ?I think the researchers missed the mark when they concluded that ?Aerobic exercise is better than resistance training for weight and fat loss? ? Read on to find out why and see what the top trainers, best bodybuilders and hottest fitness models in the world really say is the ?best way to burn fat the fastest?

The press release headline said:

?Aerobic exercise trumps resistance training for weight and fat loss.?

The New York daily news picked up the story and published this headline:

?Aerobic training may burn more fat than a combination of weights and aerobics.?

Medical News Today published this one:

?Aerobic exercise best way to burn fat, not weights.?

These were the messages getting passed all around the Internet, usually by people who clicked a ?retweet? or ?share? button and didn?t even read the entire research paper. But what did the study really tell us?

What?s better for fat loss: aerobics, weight training or both?

After reading the news blurbs, you might be ?led to believe that if your goal is fat loss, you should focus on aerobics like running or cycling, not resistance training. Although aerobics (aka cardio) is a proven way to help burn fat, I believe that saying, ?Aerobics alone is best? is sending the wrong message and taking us backwards into the dark ages of fitness.

After decades of being ignored or even shunned by the health and medical communities, and after an era of aerobics dominating the fitness scene, weight training finally got its due respect as a key element in a total fitness program, including for fat loss. ?In the strength and conditioning community, we were thrilled when institutions like the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) finally added resistance training to their position statements.

We want to see that positive message continue to be spread widely to the public. Unfortunately, we still have researchers and the media running you around in circles: First recommending aerobic training only, then it was aerobics training plus resistance training, and now they?re saying it?s just aerobics again.

Confused? Trust me, they had it right at aerobics plus resistance training, especially when you look at the big picture and not just the body fat percentage alone. Strength training is the unsung hero in achieving total health and fitness.

Of course, the media loves stories like these because there is nothing better for getting attention than controversy and contradiction. While it?s important to keep an eye on new research and balance those academic findings with real world results, in this case, I don?t agree with all the conclusions of the study authors.

Study design

The study, known as STRIDE-AT/RT (Studies of a targeted Risk Reduction Intervention through Defined Exercise ? Aerobic and Resistance Training) was conducted at Duke University in North Carolina. In this randomized controlled trial, 211 test subjects were assigned to one of three groups:

1. Resistance training

2. Aerobic training, or

3. Aerobic plus resistance training

Aerobic training included treadmill, elliptical trainers or bicycle equivalent to 12 miles per week at 65% ? 80% of peak VO2. Resistance training included 3 days per week of weight training exercises for 3 sets of 8-12 reps. There was a ramp-up period with 1-2 sets during the first month. Exercises were not specified, but they covered all major muscle groups and workouts were supervised or confirmed.

These were the general findings:

  • All three groups lost fat mass
  • All three groups decreased body fat percentage
  • The aerobic training group lost more total body mass (body weight) than the other two groups
  • The resistance training group increased lean body mass more than the other two groups (confirmed by body composition and thigh circumference measurements)
  • The resistance training group did not reduce body mass. Weight went up slightly. (However, body fat went down slightly. The lack of decrease in scale weight was due to an increase in lean mass).
  • The resistance training plus aerobic training group decreased body fat percentage and fat mass more than the other two groups.

Looking at these results, it actually appears as though the resistance training plus aerobic training group had the best fat loss results: Similar total body weight loss as the aerobic only group, but greater loss in body fat percentage and greater loss in body fat mass.

The researchers seem to discount this fact by qualifying their ?aerobics is best? conclusion based on time efficiency or what they believed was the most important outcome for health benefits.

However, the truth is ? and even Duke?s own press release didn?t mention this ? when you read the full research paper and analyze the actual change scores, NONE of the results of ANY group were very impressive..

These were the specific findings, by the numbers:

  • The aerobics only group (deemed ?most successful?), lost a mere 3.8 pounds of body weight and 3.6 pounds of fat in 8 months.
  • The resistance training group gained 2.3 pounds of lean body mass and only .57 pounds of fat mass.
  • The aerobic plus resistance group lost 5.36 pounds of fat mass and gained 1.78 pounds of lean body mass. That looks like the winner to me for overall body composition improvement, but even that is nothing to write home about.

Suppose the press release had said, ?Study shows that aerobic training produces almost 4 pounds of fat loss in 8 months,? or ?Aerobic training burns three-tenths of a pound more than aerobics plus resistance training.? Do you think there would have been so many headlines? Well, those are the numbers! That?s exactly what happened! Why was there any buzz or hoopla about these study results at all?

With proper program design, shouldn?t you be able to lose a lot more than 4 pounds in 8 months? In fact, since this study was conducted on overweight and obese subjects, wouldn?t you have expected more weight loss than average? ?(Isn?t it common to see an obese person lose 4 pounds of bodyweight in the first week?) Regardless of your starting point, if your goal is fat loss, would you be happy with less than 4 pounds for 8 months of effort?

Why the poor results? There are many possible explanations.

For one, we don?t have that many specifics about the program design, progression or energy expended from the weight training workouts. And in the aerobic group, the volume of training may simply not have been enough.

Diet: The crucial (missing?) element

More than likely, one of the biggest reasons for less fat loss and weight loss than you?d want or expect in 8 months is lack of tight control over the subject?s diets.

A cursory skimming of the study suggests that they did have the subjects report their food intake. However, it was done with 3-day food records and 24-hour food recalls. It?s a well-proven fact that self-reporting of food intake by research subjects is horribly unreliable. A lack of weight loss can very often be chalked up to more calories being eaten than were reported. No exercise program ? weights or aerobics or both ? works well without proper nutrition.

Granted studies with true control for food intake are difficult, expensive and impractical to perform, especially for extended periods of time. But fortunately, we don?t need more studies to understand what happened in this case.

We already know that the key to fat loss is the calorie deficit, not aerobic training per se and not resistance training per se. It?s possible to create a calorie deficit with ANY type of training program ? cardio or weights. However, is it possible to do aerobics and not have a deficit? Of course. Is it possible to lift weights and not have a deficit? Is it possible out-eat ANY training program? Of course.

The biggest question in my mind is why the researchers drew the conclusions they did: ?Here?s what they said, word for word:

?If increasing strength and muscle mass is the goal, a program including resistance training is required? (So far so good? we?re still cool)?

?However, balancing time commitments against health benefits accrued, it appears that aerobic training alone is the optimal mode of exercise for reducing fat mass.? (They conclude aerobics is optimal based on the results above? Really? Okay, now we have a difference in opinion).

I believe, and actually the absolute data seems to confirm it, that resistance training plus aerobic training together trumps either type of training by itself. The study authors themselves point out that each type of training has its own set of benefits. But apparently, factoring in the increased time commitment of doing both, they judged in favor of aerobics only as the preferred option for decreasing fat mass.

That raises yet another question: Should losing weight or even just losing fat be your only goal or your primary focus?

Weight training: Key to the world?s fittest, leanest, healthiest and most attractive bodies?

I?m not sure what is the background of the authors of this study. Some researchers have done purely academic work, others have a practical background in strength and conditioning. Here?s mine: I come from the trenches of a personal training and competitive bodybuilding career, with a degree in exercise science and I?ve held many personal trainer and strength coach certifications. So, I?m definitely partial to weight lifting and muscle-building as the best tool for transforming the body. However, I?m not a lone in my ?bias??

I?ve been surrounded by other professionals in the fitness trenches my entire life and I don?t know a trainer worth his salt (one who actually transforms other people?s bodies every day) who agrees that aerobic training should be the sole focus of a fat loss program or even that fat loss should be the sole focus of a health and fitness program.

Mind you, I?m not knocking aerobics ? not at all. I?m a big fan of including cardio as one part of the mix. That?s my whole point: It?s practically common knowledge among experienced trainers that better body composition is produced from combining weight training with cardio training.

There is a group of strength coaches and diet gurus today who insist that weight training combined with very strict diet is sufficient to produce fat loss. Surely that is true, but isn?t it also true that most people seem to get better results when adding cardio on top of weight training? Aren?t there ?endomorph? body types where weight training alone doesn?t seem to produce the ?fat loss/ weight loss results wanted at the rate they are wanted? Didn?t this study seem to bear that out? ?I can side with the researchers as far as that goes: Weight training alone may not be optimal for fat loss for most people. Put cardio into the mix.

I suppose a good question is how do we prioritize and allocate our time to each activity? Following the same rationale as the researchers ? balancing time commitments with health benefits ? shouldn?t weight training be higher in the hierarchy than aerobics? Shouldn?t an ideal program start with weight training plus nutrition as the core elements and then add cardio in to increase fat loss and conditioning as needed? That?s how I see it: Use both forms of training and get them into a hierarchy of importance relative to your goals and time available.

For those with real time commitment issues, it?s comforting to know that fat loss can be achieved just by dialing in the diet (being meticulous about caloric deficit), and that a calorie deficit can be achieved with any choice of exercise. In a perfect world, I?d have you doing all three, with that order of priority: Nutrition, weight training and cardio training.

The muscle and metabolism argument: Was this point overlooked?

Although this study had limitations and subjects had less than stellar results, it did have its strengths and it did raise some valid questions. I think a valid point was made in this research paper that may have been even more important than the part that made all the headlines. Nobody in the media or the discussions that ensued seemed to mention this. It was about the role of increasing lean body mass in helping with fat loss.

It has been widely believed and advertised for years, especially in the bodybuilding world, that if increasing lean mass increases metabolism, then increasing your lean mass will help yo lose weight. It has sometimes even been implied or stated directly that you can sit on the couch or sleep and (with your new muscle), you?ll burn more calories and lose more fat from that alone.

The Duke researchers suggested that if this were true, shouldn?t the resistance training only group have fared better in the fat mass lost department? They wrote:

?It may be time to seriously reconsider the conventional wisdom that resistance training alone can induce changes in fat mass due to an increase in metabolism.?

It?s well known that an increase in lean body mass leads to an increase in basal metabolic rate. Therefore, for years, we have promoted the idea that gaining lean mass helps with fat loss ? and it does to some degree. However, it doesn?t help so much that we can say increasing lean mass, by itself, is a great fat loss strategy. If you only gain a few pounds of lean body mass, the increase in metabolism is nothing to write home about. Without dietary control, it?s no help at all.

It seems to me that the researchers could have made this their primary conclusion. Instead, they said, ?Aerobics is better than weight training for fat loss.? ?That?s where I think they mixed up their message, because weight training does help with fat loss in the short term, directly and significantly, from increased calorie expenditure. But over the long term, not as much as we thought from increased basal metabolism.

Conclusions

Because the research is so inconclusive and opinions alway vary due to personal ideaologies, the weights versus cardio (and what kind of each) debates are likely to continue. But if you consider the entire body of research we have today on improving body composition, combined with the real world experience of the top trainers and athletes who are in the trenches, you can find it very easy to conclude that the optimal method of fat loss is a combination of cardio training and resistance training.

Is more time required to do both resistance and aerobic training? Yes, but with proper program design, time efficiency and be greatly increased (and that is a subject I will be more heavily exploring in future Burn the Fat Blog posts). And isn?t it worth doing both, so you can gain ALL the benefits: burning more calories, increasing your strength, gaining lean muscle, decreasing your body fat, improving your health and transforming your entire body shape?

Aerobics helps increase fat loss and you can lose body weight and body fat with aerobics alone. But pumping iron should stay high on your fat loss strategy list. Which of these two ? cardio or weights ? gets the most priority and time from you may depend on your personal goals, but almost everyone can agree that either way, controlling your diet is critical.

When you add in motivation and accountability, that increases compliance to those first three elements, and you have as close to a ?no fail? program as you?ll ever have?Hey??doesn?t that sound a lot like Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle?

Many Hospitals Serving Needy Scroogish With Charity Care

The New York World:

New Yorkers who get sick during the holiday season but don?t have the money to pay for a doctor may want to tread cautiously at some city hospitals.

Earlier this year, the Community Service Society found that many city hospitals are Scroogish when it comes to charity care ? health services paid for out of a special state fund created to aid poor patients. Instead, they put many of those patients through debt collections, and only when those efforts fail do they collect funds from the pool, which is financed largely through surcharges on hospital care.

3 Niche PR Tactics That Just Might Work for Your Business

Not every product is right for every person. Some items are just for a certain subset of customers and will never be for anyone else. It?s not bad or good; it?s just the way it goes, and even a tiny market is something to be grateful for.

Just like niche products, there are certain PR tactics that will work well with a small audience and ONLY them. You can try to expand their reach, but in the end you?ll just attract the same audience you had before. And there?s nothing wrong with that!

Going to the Home Turf

This PR tactic may actually lead to a bigger audience simply because of the word-of-mouth factor, but it is still a niche tactic. That?s because you?re going directly to the source: where your customers and fans hang out!

Whether it?s online or offline, the communities where your customers go are very important to them, and they trust other members not to lead them astray. As such, if you want to become ?one of them? in order to build this trust, you have to earn it. It?s a very sticky situation but can lead to big things.

So for example if you want to post regularly on a forum, you can?t just go in with guns blazing. You have to make sure everyone there knows you?re an expert in your field and you actually care what they have to say. Only then can you start leading them towards your company and/or store.

Counter-Culture

Contrary to what your teens are telling you, there are actually quite a few people who ?go against the grain.? In fact, I?d be willing to bet the vast majority of people in the world don?t conform to every single aspect of the lifestyle ?expected? of them, whatever that is.

Your challenge, though, is to make it seem like your customers are the only ones to buck the trend. You?re effectively creating your own ?counter-culture? around your product. The trick is to not make the niche too small as you could slip up and make everybody feel isolated instead of creating a tight group. Take a look at Apple and hipsters as the obvious example of this one.

Introduce ?Attitude?

Most businesses go for a fairly ?neutral? tone of voice with their online language. This is an attempt to be as professional and reach as broad of an audience as possible. For the most part, it?s a great idea.

However, if you?re trying to reach a niche audience, you want to adapt at least a little of their unique point of view. I?m not saying if you make skateboards your Facebook page should be filled with ?yeah, bro!? and ?sup, dude?? because you will just end up sounding ridiculous.

However, a little adjustment can go a long way. It helps if you know a lot about the culture you?re selling to ? figure out what they?re really about and adopt some of their mannerisms and, yes, sayings, as long as they are few and far between. Your customers (and future customers) will take notice.

What are some niche ways you?ve reached customers before?
